After an interesting week of racing in one of the world’s most beautiful sailing venues, two teams have risen to the top of the ranks after eight races in South America’s largest regatta. Ernesto Breda’s B&C 46 Touche Super-Gol never got worse than 3rd place to dominate the nine-boat ORCi 500 Class, but Renato Cunha’s Beneteau First 40.7 Ventaneiro had a much harder fight, winning the 14-boat ORCi 600 Class only on an amazing three-way tie-break with a sistership, Inacio Vandressen’s Zeus, and Francisco Freitas’s Tripp 33 Sanchico 2.
The win for Breda also gives him the 2010 South American ORCi Championship title, having finished as runner-up in the previous event in the Rolex Circuito Atlantico series in Argentina. "The class was very good this year. The number of boats have been increasing, the competition is very fierce on the water, which enhances our result," extolled Breda.
This is traditionally the largest regatta in South America, attracting 57 ORC entries this year mostly form Brazil, though teams were also on hand from Argentina, Uruguay, and across the Andes from Chile. Notable among these was CNO Chairman Cristobal Lira’s Soto Acebal-designed 42-footer Itau, who had a difficult start to the regatta, but then came into their form to get within 3 points of Touche Super-Gol. Conversely, Andr Mirsky’s 50-footer Neptunus Express had a strong start to the week, but could not overcome mediocre finishes mid-week to get to the podium.
Winners in the ORC Club classes included Toribio de Achaval’s venerable Frers 50 Matrero in the 9-boat ORC Club 600 Class, Leonardo de Boni’s Skipper 30 Best Fellow in the 11-boat ORC Club 670 Class, and Renato Plass’s J/24 Angela VI in the 13-boat ORC Club Class. It's a testament to the versatility of ORC Rating systems to provide competitive handicaps to such a diverse array of boat types, particularly in these ORC Club classes.
